Tracking KPIs for a new employee

April 26, 2024

When business coaches start talking KPIs (key performance indicators, that is), people sometimes start to glaze over.

I’ve been there in my first business–tracking performance metrics can seem daunting, particularly when you are staring at the blank slate of a new hire. But when you’ve put in the time and effort to recruit the right employee, you don’t want to let them fall by the wayside. With the right approach, you can set your team members up for success, aligning their goals with the broader vision of your company.

Here are some important tips for tracking and achieving excellence as you build your team.

Begin with a clear job description and defined responsibilities. Ensure every new hire understands their role and how it contributes to your company mission. This clarity sets the foundation for success.

KPIs should reflect not just performance but also adherence to company core values. Identify KPIs that resonate with your company’s ethos, ensuring employees are being effective and aligned with your culture.

Reflect on what made you or others successful in similar positions. Pick 3-5 measurable KPIs critical for success in the role. These should be specific, measurable, and directly tied to impactful outcomes.

Success can look different for each individual. Work with the new employee to define what success means to them. Assign a metric to this definition and regularly check in to see if they’re hitting the mark.

Clear communication of these metrics is essential. Make sure KPIs are communicated effectively from the start. Schedule regular check-ins to discuss their progress and challenges and to recalibrate KPIs as needed. This fosters growth and adaptation.
